Fed5

One disadvantage to not using a digital camera most of the time is that I couldn’t come back from yesterday’s Toronto Photoblogger Meet-up with any instant shots of the geeky good times. I did take a few shots with the AE-1 but those won’t surface for a while still.

Here’s a rundown of who attended:

Rannie : Photojunkie
Gayla : Making Happy
Davin : Low Resolution
Jon : Groundglass
Zee : I’ll call you Zee
Chris : Free Delivery
Chris : Visual Palate
Simon : Three Apples High
Carrie : Delineated
Matt : The Photo Mat
Natalie : Luminescent
Matt : The Narrative
Alison : Hello and Lala Land
David : This Boy is Toast

There was some talk, some of it from me, of making the meet-ups monthly. It was good to see everyone and meet some new people and overdose on camera talk big time. Chris was talking about doing something at his place with projections and drinks and such so maybe next month before Toronto freezes over.

Oh and here’s a funny picture taken by Jon at Ground Glass — a pricey tableload of cameras new and old.

Another old Fed5 shot. Kind of blurry but it has really nice colour and I liked the two artificial textures.

I’m putting this up mainly to show Chris (and anyone one else who’s interested) my first not wholely successful results with the Fed5 and Jupiter11 135mm lens. This is the best of the 7 or so pictures I’ve taken so far.

There are two big hurdles using a lens that isn’t the standard 55mm lens with the Fed5.

First, I have to continue to focus with the standard rangefinding viewfinder even though it’s framing is based on a 55mm view — so accurate focusing is tough.

Second, because I can only frame the 135mm view by using an extra mounted viewfinder (turret style for 5 different lens types) that sits roughly 5-7cm above the lens, there is a large parallax shift that I’ll have to learn to account for.

I think overall it will be sort of fun in the spring and summer when ungloved hands are allowed.

I’m getting back a few rolls of film today after a large gap in both taking and processing pictures. I thought I would throw up some crazy yellow Fed-5 shots from when the last of the fall leaves were still hanging on.

These were taken just before dusk using the Fed’s “B” setting with no tripod. I still don’t know what it is about the Fed-5 that promotes these bizarre yellow shots but in this case low light had something to do with it.

when there was sun: papyrus at the montreal botanical gardens

Photos from when we went to the Jardin Botanique in Montreal in the summer. These shots of papyrus from the large pond in the Chinese garden (also seen here) show an interesting quirk that my Fed5 has; in some photos the entire shot will get a golden yellow cast. I haven’t been able to figure out the circumstances but I’m assuming it’s some sort of flare when the light hits the lens in a particular way. I’ve liked the result when it’s happened so far even though it’s quite random.
