nyc red trash

First of a few shots from New York. Most of the shots I took were storefronts, details of residential architecture, or wider skyline shots. I still have a couple of rolls of slide film to pick-up on Monday and one of those should have a bunch (probably too many) of shots from the Staten Island ferry. Taking the ferry was the main touristy thing we did while in New York since we were busy with stuff related to Gayla’s book most of the time.
We also did go to see the Diane Arbus show at The Met which is a huge, truly exhaustive show. We both agreed that there were highlights in the show but that the work overall didn’t have a strong effect on us. The show is extremely well designed though with multiple “resource rooms” highlighting Arbus’ journals, cameras, and process. Arbus had a huge amount of trepidation, it would seem, about her skills with the camera — some of which honestly shows — but she definitely had some wonderful moments even when technically flawed. Technical skill is not something I hold up before aesthetics and emotional impact. I guess that’s fairly clear if you looked through my archive at all.

I should have some film back from New York by tomorrow. Until then, this is another from Niagara Falls.
Thanks to Bob for the film grab-bag he sent our way. I shot some of the slide film he sent in New York so we’ll see how I did.
On a film note, anyone going to New York should go to B&H if only for the experience of a massive store filled with hasidic guys and your order zipping around the store like magic. They also have some pretty nice in-store deals.
