No huge breakthroughs yet but New York was nice if only that it always provides visuals in bulk. At some point it would be nice to spend an extended period of time in New York. I think that some of things that present themselves immediately to be photographed are elements like signage and architecture but obviously there is a deeper sense of a city like that. I do think I have some shots from there that have an intimacy beyond that surface-level excitement about a new set of urban aesthetics but I also think that a city like that needs some time to sink in and feel comfortable enough to photograph. I could be totally wrong though. The “fresh” nature of being dropped into such a visually dense city can also make for good photos.

I think I’d like to spend more time in Brooklyn. Manhattan is amazing in many ways but it’s also getting too much of a monied veneer in certain areas. On the trip we just took, we walked around Greenpoint and Williamsburg — which despite Williamsburg’s hipster rep are very simple neighbourhoods. Brooklyn unfortunately has an accidental relationship with poor weather for us. We went to Coney Island and not only was it closed but very overcast. And our walk through Greenpoint and Williamsburg was almost entirely through hard driving rain which soaked both of us to the skin. I’d like a good couple of days (with sun) to explore around there.

I should mention that the above shot is actually from Toronto after all this New York talk.
