Man, I hate it when I get sand in my shoes! Those were some nice kicks.

this is horribly morbid but it reminds me of a picture that would be used for missing children announcements.

Davin – 26 June 2004 @ 5pm

Morbid, yes, but exactly what went through my head as well.

I’m sure it’s just left behind after a family outing but I thought the image had a real level of sadness to it regardless.

Davin, how did you create the vignette effect?

Davin – 27 June 2004 @ 12am

Ali — I’ll reveal my vast ignorance and say, “I’m not really sure…”

This was shot with a 50mm lens wide open at f1.8 but the lighting conditions were odd since it was dusk.

It’s likely a mixture of the weird low angle of the light and the fairly flat tonal range of the background. The light was also coming from behind me so that probably also accounts for the image falling so quickly from light to dark.

Can anyone confirm or deny that?

when you are shooting wide open with some lenses (cheaper/wider) they can vignette.

conrad – 27 June 2004 @ 1am

Furthermore, wide angle lenses can vignette badly.

Thanks for the info. I think it really adds to the mood of the photo.

conrad obviously read my post!
