Yesterday we tried out some very old cyanotype and van dyke photo chemistry. The cyanotype chemicals were a literal washout — it would expose but then completely rinse out in the water fix. The van dyke was much more successful. The chemicals weren’t 100% but at least we got some images and the browns were still quite deep.

I didn’t have any larger format negatives so I printed out some inverted black and white images onto vellum which worked somewhat. My results came out sort of multi-toned and messy I think because I brushed on the chemistry with an overly loaded haike brush.

We also did a few sunprints. It was a photo fun afternoon on the deck.

Excellent. I wish I had the resources to experiment with this type of thing. Very interesting.

sounds like a good bit of fun, davin. i can’t wait to set up our darkroom and start playing.

But the cool thing is that you don’t even need the darkroom, you can expose your cyanotypes or van dykes out in the Georgia sun.
