Zenit EM

Here’s one of the pictures from the first roll put through the $20 Zenit EM SLR I got recently. The standard Helios 58mm lens it quite nice and is enjoyable to use in the manual stopped-down mode. On some of my shots I was overzealous in shooting everything with the aperture wide open. The Helios is an f2 lens so I had a few shots that were a bit washed out. I’ve gotten to used to the f3.5 28-80mm lens I think.

I think the Zenit will be a really nice compliment to the AE-1 or even to take on its own if I want to carry something marginally smaller.

This picture’s a bit on the dark side (poor light, no tripod) but I had to take some pictures of this orangutan at the Metro Toronto Zoo. She made herself this pillow by piling straw and wrapping it in the blanket. Her expression was one of deep depression which was hard to deal with.

The zoo in general is always a mixed experience. I like to see the live animals but I always come away feeling hurt for their limited living conditions. I know that there’s an argument for the balance between captive animals and the destruction of natural habitats but zoos still seem somewhat like a Victorian spectacle.

The apes especially are difficult to see as they lead such clearly emotional lives. Their facial expressions are so close to our own.

Canon AE-1

The last of the Mike’s Munchies photos (for now).

Today we bought a couple of super cheap Zenit EM 35mm SLR cameras. The Zenit EM is a Russian camera with a body somewhat like the Canon AE-1. It takes 44mm screw-mount lenses. Both of the ones we got came with a Helios 58mm / f2 lens. There’s also a selenium light meter that is likely more than a bit off from age.

Look for some shots from this new one sometime soon.
